The god of lightning in Norse Mythology, Thor has been depicted in many movies, games, and even books, but I think we can all agree that the most iconic depiction of Thor came from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Thor character was perfectly suited for Chris Hemsworth, as he conveyed both charm and a sense of being lost along life’s journey. According to Marvel’s popularity poll, Thor has gathered a cult following, and his immense popularity could only be matched by Captain America and exceeded by Iron Man and Spider-Man.

Getting the audience engaged in a fantasy setting that had previously been solely science fiction might have been a challenging issue for Marvel Studios with a completely new character.

All Thor Movies in Chronological Order

Thor has a total of 4 movies. Apart from the movies where Thor plays the main role, there are a total of 4 Avengers movies where Thor plays a more supportive role. In this blog post, we will give you insights into all Thor movies talking about whether they are worth your time or not.

  1. Thor

    Director: Kenneth Branagh

Writers: Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, Don Payne

Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman

    Genres: Action, Fantasy

    Thor (2011) on IMDb

Thor (2011) set a strong foundation for the upcoming movies to build upon. Released right after the success of Iron Man 2 Thor had big shoes to fill, and it proved its worth at the box office.

Kenneth Branagh’s direction brought to life a comic world that suits the movie. Set in Asgard, the residing place of Thor. In the beginning, Thor appears to be an untested and eager prince of Asgard. On the day of his crowning, a small group of ice giants attacks Asgard for petty theft, and this starts an all-out war between them and the Asgardians.

As a punishment, he is banished to Earth, where he meets an astrophysicist and an adventure to retrieve his hammer ensues. It sets up Loki as the perfect villain for the upcoming Avengers movie.

The movie takes its time setting up the rules of this universe, the character, and their traits. The pacing of the movie can be slightly off due to the clash of the romance and action plot.

  2. The Avengers

    Director: Joss Whedon

    Writers: Joss Whedon, Zak Penn

Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson

    Genres: Action, Sci-Fi

    The Avengers (2012) on IMDb

In this movie, Thor teams up with Iron Man, Captain America, and Hulk to defeat a threat to all of humanity on Earth. Earth, after gaining access to unlimited power through the tesseract, plans on ruling over Earth with the help of the Chitauri Race. Thor’s involvement is mostly for fighting but the little character growth goes a long way for him accepting the evil ways of his little brother.

Avenger (2012) was a milestone in the early days of Marvel, the movie was paced perfectly, and the fights were well-choreographed and animated to perfection. The team-up of the superheroes who were being built up for nearly four years was paid off in kind with interest by this movie.

  3. Thor: The Dark World

    Director: Alan Taylor

Writers: Christopher L. Yost, Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely

Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston

    Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Thor: The Dark World (2013) on IMDb

Coming from the humongous success of Avengers (2012), people had high expectations for the next installment of the Thor movie series. Safe to say this movie disappointed quite a lot of fans in many aspects which will be discussed further.

In search of Thor, who promised to return, Jane Foster is looking for ways to establish a way of communicating with him. In this process, she comes in contact with the “Aether, a source of energy worshiped by an old alien race known as the ‘Dark Elves’, which possesses her. To save Jane from the aether Thor contacts the leader of the dark elves Malekith, to whom he lost a war in the far past. Malekith takes Jane prisoner and plans on destroying the nine realms.

The main reason this movie bummed in theaters was the lack of a strong-willed villain, Malekith as a villain was served all he could need on a platter, he had to put no effort into making a plan, and his backstory as a conqueror falls flat. Going for a darker tone for the movie was a good decision. The change of story from a Shakespearean format to a darker, prisoner-to-rescue was a good idea on Alan Taylor’s part (previously directed Game of Thrones).

  4. Avengers: Age Of Ultron

    Director: Joss Whedon

Writers:Writers: Joss Whedon, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby

Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo

    Genres: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) on IMDb

After raiding a Hydra base in Sokovia, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner find an AI inside the gem of Loki’s scepter. They decide to use this AI to jump-start a global defense project “Ultron”. Ultron, based on his conclusion, decides to end all of humanity and even kills J.A.R.V.I.S, Tony’s AI assistant in the process.

Thor’s entry at the film’s climax provides a nice cameo but not an effective performance. His random hallucination trips are often confusing and not required to be included between story development.

However, this Superhero fiction covers some of the best live-action sequences and you can watch it for its lighthearted comedy by the wisecracking AI, Ultron. The fight scenes are amazing, the storytelling is on point, and the actors play their roles perfectly.

  5. Thor: Ragnarok

    Director: Taika Waititi

Writers: Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, Christopher L. Yost

Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett

Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

    Thor: Ragnarok (2017) on IMDb

Thor Ragnarok was a well-executed and well-produced film that broke all earning records of the previous movies. Taika Waititi took the general formula of a Thor movie and honed it to perfection.

After falling out of the Bifrost, Thor passes through a wormhole and gets dumped on the planet of Sakkar. He now has to escape this planet but has no time to rest as he has to face an enemy from the past that he never knew existed. Having to team up with unexpected allies, Thor has to beat this threat, as they decide to rule over Asgard after killing Thor and his helpers.

The movie has well-animated and choreographed action, beautifully crafted scenery, and humorous dialog throughout its 2-hour runtime.

  6. Avengers: Infinity War

    Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo

Writers: Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, Stan Lee

Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo

    Genres: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) on IMDb

The movie starts with Thanos trying to fulfill his mission of collecting all the infinity stones to wipe up half of the living creatures in the universe to restore “balance” to it. The Avengers are in full swing trying to stop Thanos from collecting the stones by trying to reach them first, but will they succeed?

Thor plays a crucial part in this movie and the implications of his action are very widespread, Chris Hemsworth gave this performance his all. If this movie ever gets re-released in theaters, it would be a crime to not go watch it.

  7. Avengers: Endgame

    Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo

Writers: Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, Stan Lee

Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo

    Genres: Action, Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

    Avengers: Endgame (2019) on IMDb

In search of the original infinity stones, the Avengers locate Thanos but find out the infinity stones were destroyed. Thor appears heartbroken and responsible for everything that went wrong, but when he travels back in time and meets his beloved mother, it reignited the fire in him and he gets all geared up to fight Thanos. The whole universe is at stake and he finds all possible ways and gathers power and strength to face the most ruthless villain and a madman, Thanos we figured out what he did when he had all 6 infinity stones and snapped off half of humankind.

After this many of our heroes had given up on the prospect of reversing what had happened till the arrival of Antman who was stuck in the quantum realm.

Many fans consider this to be the last movie of phase 3 (even though Spiderman Far from Home is officially the last one) and for good reason, this movie wraps up the whole Thanos saga and provides a very bittersweet end to all the build-up before it.

  8. Thor: Love and Thunder

    Director: Taika Waititi

Writers: Taika Waititi, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Stan Lee

Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale

Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, Sci-Fi

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) on IMDb

Thor Love and Thunder was beautifully produced as the most recent addition to the Thor franchise. Taika Waititi wanted to show a different side of Thor’s character, which is clearly visible in the movie.

During a desperate drought, Gorr (played by Christian Bale) loses his daughter to dehydration. After finding a god who willfully decided not to help Gorr, Gorr makes to kill all the gods of the universe. With the help of a surprise attack with aliens, Gorr the God Butcher is able to kidnap all the Asgardian kids, and Thor heads to the task of defeating him with the help of his new partner, Jane Foster as The Almighty Thor.

As a secondary plot line, we follow the story of Jane Foster after the events of Avengers: Endgame, as she develops an incurable disease. The search for this impossible cure leads her to Tønsberg, the current residing place of Asgardians.

Thor: Love and Thunder had a lukewarm reception from the fans. Marvel announced Thor’s return in this movie’s end credits scene.

Will There Be A Sequel?

As things currently stand, the return of Thor was announced at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder. If this “return” directs toward a sequel or a supporting role in the upcoming Avengers movies is unclear.

The only information we have on the story of this sequel comes from the mid-credit scene from the previous movie. It shows Zeus getting patched up after being attacked by Thor, commanding his son Hercules that they are going to war against Thor.
