The family dog Sadie refuses to enter the house for unknown reasons and is leashed outside. Later, while discovering the house they find an entrance to a basement cellar that was blocked with boards. The Perrons start experiencing disturbing and eerie things within a few nights of their stay.

    All the clocks stop exactly at 3:07 am, birds fly into their window. The next morning Sadies is found dead outside. Carolyn wakes up with large black bruises. One night Christine wakes up and notices an entity standing behind a half-open door. Nancy, her sleep mate, gets up and checks behind the door to find nothing. With Christine’s horrified expression the door slams shut. The parents barge into the room after hearing Christine’s dreadful scream.

    Roger shows Christine that there is nothing behind the door. Christine cries and trembles saying that the entity pulled her leg and told her that it wanted her family. Another night, Andrea wakes up to the sound of Cindy gently banging her head on an antic cupboard. She walks Cindy back to the bed but suddenly hears a loud bang from inside the cupboard. To both the girls’ shock, a hideous-looking entity pounces on Andrea.

    Roger returning from his work, hears Andrea’s shrills and sprints towards her room. The confusion and distress persist. Carolyn approaches paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren to help the haunted family. The Warrens agree and later conduct an initial investigation. Lorraine, a clairvoyant notices weird things and tells the Perrons that the dark force has latched onto the family and the problem would persist even if they left the house. With the help of their assistant Drew Thomas and Officer Brad Hamilton, they try to gather evidence to prove the existence of the entity.

    Further investigation reveals that the land on which the house was built belonged to a witch named Bathsheba Sherman, who sacrificed her infant, confessed her love to the devil, and hanged herself to a tree exactly at 3:07 in the morning after cursing all those who wanted to possess her land. They also find records of numerous suicides and murders in the houses built on the land. Subsequently, Carolyn’s health deteriorates with more prominent black bruises.

    One day, while she rests on her bed, Bathsheba appears, vomits black bile in Carolyn’s mouth, and possesses her. Lorraine witnesses the witch’s body hanging from the tree. That night, from the EVPs the investigators hear a spirit luring Cindy inside the antic cupboard and there she reveals a secret passage. Lorraine enters to the passage but the passage gives in and Lorraine falls right down to the cellar. Lorraine encounters the spirit of a woman who was possessed by Bathsheba and killed her child.

    Lorraine losses the locket with the picture of her daughter Judy in it inside the cellar. Bathsheba’s attack on Nancy made its existence evident to conduct an exorcism. While the Perrons temporarily move to a motel, the Warrens visit Father Gordon to permit an exorcism. Father Gordon replies that since the Perrons are not Christian, the approval must come directly from the Vatican. Bathsheba manages to attack Judy through the locket.

    With the help of “Annabelle”, the witch tries to kill Judy but Ed saves her in the nick of time. Annabelle is returned to the box and Bathsheba returns to her land. Carolyn takes Christine and April to kill them. Ed and Lorraine rush to the farmhouse. With Officer Brad, Roger and Drew manage to decapacitate Carolyn and stop her from killing Christine. They try to take her to the priest but Bathsheba does not allow it.

    Lorraine tells that bringing Carolyn out of the house would kill her. Carolyn is dragged back into the cellar. Drew tells Christine to stay inside the car while he finds April. Back at the cellar, others struggle to get a hold of Carolyn. They finally manage to tie her up to the chair. Ed knowing they don’t have much time decides to conduct the exorcism. Carolyn possessed by Bathsheba violently reacts to the holy water and the prayers.

    Drew manages to find April under the kitchen floor and tries to break an opening. She levitates with the chair and falls breaking free. They pin her down. Bathsheba attempts to kill Ed. Drew shouts out to which Carolyn escapes and crawls towards the kitchen basement. April tries to get away from Carolyn.

    Carolyn tries to kill her daughter but Lorraine places her hand on Carolyn’s head from the floor opening reminding her of a special memory when Carolyn had a wonderful time with her family on the beach. Carolyn fights back and Ed completes the exorcism. Bathsheba’s curse is lifted and she is damned to Hell. The Perron family reunites. April gives Lorraine the locket she lost. Ed adds the music box retrieved from the farmhouse to his collection of cursed objects.

Lorraine with her psychic insight relieves the moment when Robert killed his family. She also encounters the demonic entity dressed as a nun that was responsible for the ruthless murders. In her seance she sees Ed getting impaled terribly which badly frightens her.

    In 1977, the Hogdson family is haunted after their second-oldest daughter of the four plays with an ouija board to talk to spirits. Janet starts sleepwalking and converses with an old man’s spirit who has occupied the house’s armchair claiming the house is his. Gradually the family starts experiencing paranormal activities throughout the house. Terrified by the unexplainable events, Peggy Hodgson and her daughters take refuge in their neighbor’s house.

    The media tries to interview the family but Janet gets possessed in front of the camera by the old man named Billy Wilkins, who previously lived and died in the house. The news of the Enfields poltergeist reaches the Warrens and they are tasked to prove whether the case is true or just a hoax. Lorraine warns Ed about her seance during the Amityville investigation. Lorraine also has another vision where she encounters the nun-dressed demonic entity.

    The demons say its name while Lorraine scribbles it down on her Bible while in trance. Ed and Lorraine decide just to prove the legitimacy of the case and not get much involved. While they reside at Hodgson, the Warrens seek the opinions of other paranormal investigators regarding the case. Anita Gregory shows them video evidence where Janet is recorded wrecking the kitchen on purpose. Ed and Lorraine decide to leave believing that the family is lying and doing it for fame.

    Soon they learn that Wilkins’ spirit was just the pawn manipulated and threatened by the nun-dressed demonic entity. Lorraine realizes that her abilities are being blocked by the demon, preventing her from knowing the complete truth. Ed and Lorraine quickly return to the Hogdson residence. They learn that Janet is completely possessed and inside the house while the rest of them are stuck outside.

    Ed manages to break in and find her. Seeing Janet about to commit suicide, Ed runs towards her and manages to save her. Janet hangs while Ed grabs onto the window curtains. A bolt of lightning strikes turning the tree in the yard into an impaling stump exactly like in Lorraine’s vision. Lorraine struggles to get in through the back door after learning the name of the demon-Valak.

    The curtain rings break one by one while Ed gradually moves towards his demise. Lorraine enters the room and addressing the demon by its real name, condemns it back to Hell. Janet is freed from the possession and Lorraine pulls Ed and Janet back to safety. Ed back at his home adds a haunted “Crooked Man” zoetrope to his cursed object collection.

The exorcism does not look successful and Arne allows the demon to possess his body. Ed is the only one to notice the demon transferring itself into Arne but Ed has a heart attack and falls unconscious. He is rushed to the hospital and the exorcism is assumed successful.

    The following month, Ed regains his consciousness and tells Lorraine about Arne’s possession. Lorraine calls up the police and notifies them about something bad happening back at the Glatzel. Debbie and Arne return to their apartment after David’s exorcism. Arne starts feeling unwell while Debbie dances. Arne starts experiencing frightful hallucinations. He ends up stabbing his landlord, Bruno Sauls 22 times due to his demonic possession.

    Arne is arrested on the charges of murder and his case becomes the first American murder trial to claim demonic possession as a defense with the help of the Warrens. The Warren investigate the Glatzel’s house and find a witch’s totem under the house. The Warrens later discover a satanic curse passed on through a witch’s totem. They visit Kastner, a former priest who dealt with the Disciples of the Ram cult who tells that the totem was intentionally placed to cause the possession of David.

    The Warrens investigate further and find a similar case where the murderer stabs the victim 22 times. They travel to Danvers and learn that there was a totem involved in the killing of Katie which was found at her friend Jessica’s home. Jessica is missing and Lorraine with her clairvoyant powers sees possessed Jessica killing Katie and later jumping off of a cliff to her death. The detectives are finally able to recover Jessica’s body.

    Ed and Lorraine visit the funeral where Lorraine touches Jessica’s dead body to know the person behind the curse. Lorraine notices the occultist trying to kill Arne by controlling him. Lorraine stops her in time and is threatened by the occultist. The Warrens return to Connecticut. Drew reveals from the book that the curse the Warrens are dealing with can be lifted by destroying the alter the occultist is using. Ed also gets affected by the totem that he received inside a flower vase.

    He tries to attack Lorraine in trance but Drew stops him in time. Lorraine returns to Kastner for help, who reveals that he secretly raised a daughter named Isla in violation of the clerical celibacy in the Catholic Church. Isla grew fascinated with Kastner’s work in occultism and later became the occult behind all the murders. Kastner gives the location which leads Lorraine to Isla’s alter. Isla arrives and kills her father.

    Ed soon arrives with a sledgehammer to destroy the alter but gets bewitched by Isla. Ed tries to kill Lorraine but Lorraine forces him to recall the day they first met and his love for her. Ed regains his senses and finally destroys the alter lifting the curse. Isla gets brutally killed by the contracted demon after failing to complete the curse.

    Ed retrieves the cup from the altar and adds it to his collection of cursed artifacts. Arne gets convicted to five years of jail when he marries Debbie. Ed shows Lorraine a gazebo-like the one in which they first kissed.
